Review: ROBOCOP (2014)

Comparing with Paul Verhoeven's 1987 original version is unfair, but the new ROBOCOP here manages to stand on its own as a reasonably engaging effort.

Review: THE MONKEY KING 大鬧天宮 (2014)

THE MONKEY KING is uneven, but Donnie Yen's highly-spirited performance as Sun Wukong along with Soi Cheang's energetic direction made this a surprisingly enjoyable epic fantasy.

Review: HER (2013)
Smart, funny and poignant, HER is a fascinating cinematic experience about modern love in the cyber-obsessed era.

Review: INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS (2013)

Review: INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS (2013)
Well-acted, if flawed melancholy drama with a unique touch of Coen brothers' dark sense of humour.

Eulogy Writing Competition Closing Ceremony

Three proud winners for the Eulogy Writing Competition:
Jassie Looi, Kum Peng Han and Lisa Yeo

Kuala Lumpur, 10 January 2014: A recent attempt to crowdsource for ideas has surprised the founders of Asia's first online obituary website, Obpedia.com with strong participation in its Eulogy Writing Competition.

Mr. Kevin Leow, Director of Obpedia.com

"In conjunction with Obpedia.com and YouthsToday.com to promote Filial Piety among college youths and also to promote English writing in colleges, we came up with the idea for an eulogy-writing competition and we were pleasantly surprised," said founders Kevin Leow and Jason Cheong.

"We thought the response would be poor as we felt that the younger generation of Malaysians are generally out of touch of values such as filial piety, but we are glad to be wrong," said Leow.

The winners are Jassie Looi, Kum Peng Han and Lisa Yeo.

Were selected based on criteria such as:

1. Title: Appreciating our ancestors and loved ones
2. Theme: Cherished moments
3. Elements in Eulogy: Memorial, Beautiful memories, Treasured moments, Honouring, Legacy and Tributes.

They won RM2,000.00, RM1,500.00 and RM800.00 respectively.

"We are very pleased to see many wanting to write about their ancestors using the above guide and the stories were indeed very inspirational and truly touched".

CEO of Akademi Belia, Mr. Rahman Hussien

About Obpedia.com:

This portal provides a specific site that is interactive for posting information and also acts as a notification service for direct and personal invitation to relatives and friends on information such as the location of the funeral wake service, memorial services, religious prayer times, cremation and burial information.

Many times we have forgotten our distant relatives and friends that we have not met for many years. It's during the funeral wake services is where we see them again and keep the connected again. However, there are times we have even forgotten to notify them due to the stress, emotional and grieving state of mind that we are in, during the loss of a loved one.

Review: JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT (2014)

Despite all the talents involved, JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT is pretty much a moderate thriller that doesn't rise above its genre cliches.

Review: LONE SURVIVOR (2013)

Review: LONE SURVIVOR (2013)
One of the most brutal and realistic combat pictures ever made in recent memory.

Review: MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM (2013)
Idris Elba delivers his finest performance to date in this typical but well-meaning biopic.

Review: ONCE UPON A TIME IN SHANGHAI 惡戰 (2014)

Review: ONCE UPON A TIME IN SHANGHAI 惡戰 (2014)
Well-staged fight sequences and Philip Ng's fairly charismatic performance are the saving grace in this elegantly stylish but hollow martial arts movie.

Review: DEVIL'S DUE (2014)

A typical found-footage supernatural horror movie that fails to capitalize the intriguing ROSEMARY'S BABY-like premise.

Review: THE WOLF OF WALL STREET (2013)

Review: THE WOLF OF WALL STREET (2013)
THE WOLF OF WALL STREET is unnecessarily overlong and lacked the sustainable energy that characterised some of Martin Scorsese's best works, but it's a reasonably entertaining movie with Leonardo DiCaprio's manic performance on the loose.

Review: AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY (2013)

Review: AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY (2013)
This profanity-filled family melodrama may have been stretched into overkill, but the powerhouse acting ensemble and some worthwhile moments are irresistible enough to watch for.

Review: AS THE LIGHT GOES OUT 救火英雄 (2014)

Blessed with a solid cast and top-notch special effects, AS THE LIGHT GOES OUT is gripping if cliched firefighter drama.

Review: ALL IS LOST (2013)

Review: ALL IS LOST (2013)
Robert Redford delivers a superb one-man show in this well-crafted, minimalist survival drama.
