Review: MONEY MONSTER (2016)

Set over the course of a single day, MONEY MONSTER centres on a financial TV host Lee Gates (George Clooney), who is held hostage by an angry blue-collar worker named Kyle Budwell (Jack O'Connell) in the midst of a live show. Apparently, Kyle lost his entire US$60,000 savings on IBIS stock and blames Lee for making a false prediction in the first place.

Set in the late 1970s Los Angeles, the movie deals with the unlikely partnership of incompetent private eye Holland March (Ryan Gosling) and tough-guy enforcer Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe), who end up working together to investigate the disappearance of a young girl named Amelia (Margaret Qualley) and the apparent death of a porn star. But as their investigations delve deeper, the case turns out to be more complicated than it originally appears.

Although it's a step down from X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, this otherwise overstuffed third movie in the X-MEN: FIRST CLASS trilogy still packs a satisfying amount of popcorn-worthy thrills and mostly cohesive character-driven drama.

Red (voice of Jason Sudeikis) is a reclusive bird outcast prone to short-temper behaviour. Following a disastrous incident that ruined his client's birthday party, he is sentenced by Judge Peckinpah (Keegan-Michael Key) to an anger management class. From there, he meets his fellow outcasts including the speedy yellow bird Chuck (Josh Gad) and the volatile black bird Bomb (Danny McBride). One day, when their island is visited by mysterious green pigs, Red and his two new buddies set out to investigate their true intentions.
