Review: DEEPWATER HORIZON (2016)

Based on a true event of the worst oil disaster ever recorded in the U.S. history, the movie revolves around the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling rig that ended up killing 11 workers and caused a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. During that fateful day of April 20, 2010, the workers aboard the Deepwater Horizon include chief electronics technician Mike Williams (Mark Wahlberg), offshore installation manager Jimmy Harrell (Kurt Russell) and a sole female crew member Andrea Fleytas (Gina Rodriguez). The explosion begins when BP supervisor Donald Vidrine (John Malkovich) insists the Deepwater Horizon crew to run the ill-fated pressure test.

Review: MISS PEREGRINE'S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN (2016)

Based on the 2011 novel of the same name by Ransom Riggs, MISS PEREGRINE'S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN tells a story about a 16-year-old teenager named Jake (Asa Butterfield), who recently lost his beloved grandfather (Terence Stamp). Prior to his mysterious death, his grandfather used to tell him bedtime stories about a peculiar orphanage in Wales. In order to seek some closures, he decides to travel to the very place and soon discovers his late grandfather was telling the truth all the while. Jake eventually get to meet the peculiar children as well as the orphanage's headmistress herself, Miss Peregrine (Eva Green) and get to know their special abilities. Besides finding himself stuck in a loop on the same day in 1943, he also discovers Miss Peregrine has been trying to protect her peculiar children from the hideous monsters known as the Hollows and a group of white-eyed human forms of the Wights, led by Mr. Barron (Samuel L. Jackson).

Based on the memoir Highest Duty: My Search For What Really Matters by Chesley Sullenberger and Jeffrey Zaslow, SULLY recounts the story behind the "Miracle on the Hudson", in which Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger (Tom Hanks) miraculously landed the US Airways Flight 1549 in the freezing waters of the Hudson River following a collision with the birds. Despite saving all 155 passengers and crew on board, Sully and his first officer Jeff Skiles (Aaron Eckhart) find themselves under the investigation of the National Traffic Safety Board (NTSB) over Sully's questionable decision of executing an emergency landing in the river rather than attempting to divert the plane back to the airport.

A Dutch couple Simone (Loes Haverkort) and Eric (Mark van Eeuwen) as well as their two kids moved to a ramshackle farmhouse in France owned by her recently deceased mother. Planning to renovate the farmhouse into a bed and breakfast, they end up hiring a Dutch contractor Peter (Peter Paul Muller) who happens to live in the neighbourhood. As the renovation gets underway, Simone is immediately attracted to one of Peter's handsome construction workers Michel (Pierre Boulanger). Needless to say, they eventually fall in love and things doesn't go well from there.

In this reboot of 1989's KICKBOXER, Kurt Sloane (Alain Moussi) avenges his brother's death (the late Darren Shahlavi who died early last year due to heart attack) after he was killed in the ring by the vicious Tong Po (Dave Bautista). In order to defeat Tong Po, Kurt seeks help from his brother's trainer Master Durand (Jean-Claude Van Damme) to master the art of Muay Thai fighting technique.
